The one-child policy has been adopted in China for decades.
W: Thanks for buying me a train ticket to Shanghai. It is hard to get a sleeper ticket during the Spring Festival holiday.
M: You’re welcome.
M: How would you like to go to the KTV tonight for a bit of dancing and singing?
W: Oh, how about something different? Do you think you’d like to see that new film Lost in Thailand?
M: No, not really. It’s OK — if you don’t want to go to KTV, I’ll just do some reading at the library.
(Text 3) (换外汇,32 words)
W: What can I do for you, sir?
M: I’d like to exchange some money, euros, please. I will be going to Berlin on business.
W: Foreign exchange? Sure. How much do you want?
M: Fifteen thousand euros.
W: What’s the weather report for tomorrow?
M: It’s supposed to be quite foggy in the morning, but it might brighten up in the afternoon.
W: OK. As long as it doesn’t rain, we can go on that picnic with Juliet as planned.
M: Sounds great.
(Text 5) (找不到iPhone, 49 words )
M: Oh, no! Sally, it’s already 8:30.
W: What’s wrong?
M: We have to get to the airport before 9 o’clock. Hurry up.
W: Calm down! It’s only a 15-minute walk. Where is my iPhone? I can’t find it anywhere. I need it to take pictures, because my camera takes really bad pictures.
W: Hello! This is Helen speaking.
M: It’s me, Mark. I’m calling from my hotel in Rio de Janeiro. The scenery here is surprisingly beautiful.
W: Hi, dear! What have you been doing these days?
M: I’m busy with the plans for the shopping center. My colleagues here are all very friendly. So, what are you doing now, honey?
W: Oh, I’m working in the garden. The vegetables and fruit are all growing very well.
M: And what are the kids doing?
W: They’re watching cartoons. Oh, actually, Peter is now playing on the computer and Elizabeth is talking with her friend on the phone.
M: Sounds great. I’m hoping I can head back home on Friday morning.
W: Oh, that would be wonderful. I can’t wait for you to come back.
M: Hi, Sally. I’m doing a survey about our customer service. How often do you come to our health club?
W: I’m usually here on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I’m sure you’ve seen me here.
M: Yeah, I see you here a lot. So, can you run ten kilometers an hour on our running machine?
W: Oh no, not that much, maybe 5 to 6 kilometers.
M: Do you use the swimming pool a lot? You know, the new swimming pool — many of our customers seem to really like it.
W: No, I don’t use it at all. I can’t swim, and I’m scared of water.
M: OK. You know, we offer lessons here, twice a week.
W: I know, I know. But I’m really afraid of even getting in the water.
M: Well, it’s absolutely safe, and I’m sure our trainer can help you.
W: Well, perhaps I should try swimming lessons.
M: Hi, Lily.
W: Hello, Uncle Woo.
M: I’m very glad to hear that you have been admitted to Cambridge. Congratulations!
W: Thanks! Come in, please.
M: I have a gift for you. I hope you will like it.
W: Oh, thank you! It’s so beautifully wrapped. Is it an iPhone5? Umm, no. A Parker pen? Aha, it must be a new iPad.
M: Wow, you guessed it. Your mother called me last week in Beijing and told me that you’ve been longing for an iPad. So I bought one just before I left New York yesterday.
W: Oh, thank you, Uncle Woo. I love it. How much did this cost?
M: It was originally 600 dollars, but I got a 10-percent discount.
W: You are so kind. Thank you so much, Uncle Woo!
M: You are very welcome. So when will you be leaving for the university?
W: In about one month. I’m waiting for my passport now.
(Text 9)
W: I’m afraid visiting hours are over, sir.
M: My wife’s in room 3B. Just over there.
W: I’m sorry, but you’ll have to come back in the next morning.
M: And leave her all alone overnight?
W: I’m afraid that’s the policy, sir.
M: Surely you can make an exception. What if she needs me in the night?
W: Don’t worry — we’ll look after her. What she really needs is a good rest.
M: Some of her friends want to see her too. When can they come?
W: Visiting hours are from 9 to 11 in the mornings and 4 to 6 in the afternoons, but I’m afraid while your wife is on bed rest the doctor has requested that only immediate family members come in to see her.
M: Can’t her friends even stop by to bring her flowers?
W: Flowers are not permitted. We just can’t take any risk.
M: Well, I guess it’s all in her best interest.
W: Thanks for understanding. Now, I’m going to bring your wife her dinner. Why don’t you head home and get something to eat yourself?
M: Okay. I really hate to leave her, but that’s probably a good idea. She’s in good hands here.
