Anyone who has an interest in the space race should be interested in Yuri Gagarin, as he was one of the most important explorers of outer space. He was an astronaut of the former Soviet Union who lived from 1934-1968. Gagarin was the person who completed two significant firsts. He was the first person to ever travel into outer space and to orbit the earth. The two events would pave the way not only for Armstorng, who was the first on the moon, but also for all future space exploration.
An interesting point about Yuri Gagarin is that he was much too short for a full grown Russian man, measuring only 159 cm tall when full grown. However, this physical deficiency(不足) didn’t make him lose heart. Instead, he changed the disadvantage into an advantage through his efforts. He learned to fly during high school and then went on to receive military flight training. His small size allowed him to fit more comfortably in certain planes. He began flying in the former Soviet Air force as a pilot of a MiG 15. His entry into the cosmonaut(宇航员) program was made possible because of him being able to fit in the tiny cockpit(驾驶室), and his good health.

Last week, I was lucky enough to interview a foreign volunteer teaching in rural China, Eckart Loewe, about his way of volunteering. Eckart Loewe, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1968, began to love the countryside of Guangxi after 3-month tour (3 months’tour)in China in the summer of 1990. Since 1999, he has been a volunteer teacher in a village there. During teaching in China, he finds that Chinese parents always pay attention to their children’s grades, but ignore their natures and interests. In his opinion, if a person lives only for others ideas, he will never find the direction and power of himself. 


读写任务
The passage mainly takes Yuri Gagarin, a short man in height but a great man in travelling into outer space, as an example to show us that: with our effort, we can overcome our physical deficiency and gain success.
There is no doubt that everyone has certain deficiency in their appearance. As a famous saying goes: no one is perfect. This reminds me of some students around me. For example, some worry about their small size, some get annoyed that they are fat, while some are upset that they are not beautiful enough.
