Every morning, on his way to work, Mike passed an old man who was always at the same place with a cup in his hand hoping to get a bit of change from those who passed by. For most people, this person was someone to be ignored as if he didn’t exist, someone who they didn’t want to be bothered with. However, Mike would always say good morning to him and wish him a nice day and sometimes would drop a dollar or two in his cup. This behavior went on for several years until one day before retirement.
He told the man that he would no longer pass by because it was his last day on the job. The man took his hand and shook it warmly saying that he had always looked forward to seeing Mike not because he dropped a few dollars in his cup. He said he would miss him because he was one of the few people who said hello and bid him good day. The man also said that his warm words always brightened his day and helped him to continue.
We all have power of words and we often do not recognize that some can be devastating(毁灭性的) while some can be encouraging.

Sun Yang, born in Hangzhou on Dec 1, 1991, is a Chinese swimming star, who we Chinese are proud of. After graduating from Zhejiang University he has concentrated on long-distance freestyle swimming.  Besides winning two gold medals in London Olympic Games., he even eventually achieved his goal of becoming champions in men’s 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle events in the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona. At the same time, together with his teammates, he also won the third place in the men’s 4x200 meters freestyle relay in the Barcelona World Championships. What’s more, Sun Yang was awarded the best male swimmer of 2013 World Championships, becoming the first Asian swimmer to win such an award in history.

Every day Mike said hello and sometimes gave one dollar or two to an old man who was begging for a bit of change. His words encouraged the old man to continue his hard life.
I couldn’t agree more with what Mike did for the old man every day. Words have such great power that they can influence people greatly, either devastating or encouraging.
Words have magic power over people. A few warm words may brighten a day while just a hurtful sentence may leave a deep scar in a fragile heart. In our daily life, we should pay attention to what we say since it is like a double-edged sword.
I also experienced the power of words. It was a time when I failed in the first exam at senior high school. So depressed did I feel that I did not feel like talking to anyone at all. Yet after class my teacher Mr. Wang invited me to his office and said smilingly to me, “I hope you will not be defeated by temporary failure. Pick up your courage and prove that you are the best next time, will you?” All of a sudden, my world was brightened by his inspiring words. It seemed as if a stream of warmth flowed into my heart and instantly I was filled with energy and ambition to fight again.
