W: Dad, will you read to me?
M: Uh, let me finish the newspaper first?
W: You’ve been saying that forever!
M: Well, how about reading a magazine together?
W: That’s boring. Let’s read this book. It’s about a bear and a cat that become friends. And these books too.
M: Whoa. I thought you said one book. There must be ten here.
W: My teacher, Mrs. Green, says you have to read to me every night, and the newspaper doesn’t count. And let’s eat some popcorn and cookies while we’re reading.
M: Well, it’s bedtime right now. So, okay, here we go. Once upon a time in a deep, dark forest, lived a brown bear . . .

M: OK, Diana, we are going to talk about your hobby.
W: OK.
M: What is your hobby?
W: I have lots of different hobbies but right now I’m learning to play the guitar.
M: Great. How long have you been playing or practicing?
W: I got my guitar two years ago but I’ve probably spent a total of two weeks practicing.
M: Did you bring your guitar to Japan?
W: I didn’t. Actually, my brother wants to learn to play also so he’s taking good care of my guitar while I’m here, but when I get back I’ll jump right back into practicing.
M: OK, great. Well, who’s a better player?
W: I am, for sure, but I told him that if he gets better than me, he has to teach me everything he knows.
M: Oh, that’s only fair. OK. Can you play any songs?
W: Yes, I can play “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”.

W: Uh, well, just, just my personal belongings um, . . . clothes, a few books, and a CD player.

M: This is BBC World Service with David Stake in London. After a hurricane in Florida damage is expected to amount to tens of millions of dollars. Officially it’s claimed that no one was hurt. Here’s Nancy Williams reporting.
W: Miami, the well-known tourist area, is famous for white sandy beaches, blue seas, top class seafood and nice local people. However, Hurricane Sara is the third hurricane that has struck this area since last July. As many as 500 homes have been destroyed and thousands more are damaged. The white beaches are now covered in pieces of broken houses. The highway has been closed in case of accidents, cutting off this beautiful tourist site from the outside. The local officials say that hundreds of people have already been rescued, but many others preferred to remain. These people were mainly pet owners. They keep dogs, cats, birds and other animals at home; they prefer to stay because their pets don’t like being left alone. Other people insisted on going back and collecting their pets. Given this situation, the government has set up a special team to rescue the animals left behind. The rain is expected to continue for at least three days, and the staff are afraid that communications will be seriously damaged by strong winds and heavy rain. This will make it more difficult for rescue teams to get into the city. For BBC World Service, this is Nancy Williams in Miami, Florida.
