I must have been about fourteen then, and I put away the incident from my mind with the easy carelessness of youth. But the words, which Carl Walter spoke that day, came back to me years later, and ever since have been of great value to me.
Carl Waller was my piano teacher.During one of my lessons he asked how much practice I was doing.I said three or four hours a day.
"Do you often practice so long at a time?" asked my teacher.
"I try to," I answered.
Well, don' t," ge said. “When you grow up, time won' l come in long periods.Practice in minutes whenever you can find them, five or ten before school, after lunch, or between household tasks.Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life."

When I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write, but class periods, theme-reading and committee meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my.excuse was that I had no time. Then I remembered what Carl Walter had said.
During the next week I conducted an experiment.Whenever I had five minutes to spare, I would sit-down and write a hundred words or so.To my astonishment, at the end of the week I had a rather large manuscript (手稿) ready for revision, later on I wrote novels by the same means.
Though my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, every day there were free moments which could be caught and put to use.I even took up piano-playing again, finding that the small intervals of the day provided enough time for both writing and piano practice.
There is an important trick in this time-using formula; you must get into your work quickly. If you--have only five minutes for writing, you can't afford to waste four minutes chewing your pencil. You must make your mental preparations ahead of time, and focus on your task almost immediately when the time comes.Fortunately, rapid concentration is easier than most of us realize. 高考网Www.gaoKw.CoM

LONDON —For sale: the world' s smallest country with its own flag, stamps, currency and passports.
Apply to Prince Michael of Sealand if you want to run your own nation, even if it' s just a wartime fort (堡垒) lying on two concrete towers in the North Sea.Built in the Second World War as an anti-aircraft base to fight against German bombers, the deserted platform was taken over 40 years ago by a retired army officer Paddy Roy Bates, who went to live there with his family.

He declared the platform, lying seven miles off the east coast of England and just outside Britain's territorial (领土的) waters, to be the principality (公国) of Sealand. The self-styled Prince Roy adopted a flag, chose a national anthem and made silver and gold coins.
The family saw off attempts by Britain' s Royal Navy to force them to leave and also an attempt in 1978 by a group of German and Dutch businessmen to seize Sealand by force.
"I was held prisoner out there for three or four days and then managed to get back to England ," Roy' s son Michael said.
Prince Michael, whose 85-year-old father now lives in Spain, said his family had been approached by customers "who wanted freedom, more than the houses".
Asked what were the delights of living on Sealand, the 54-year-old prince said, "The neighbors are very quiet. There is a good sea view. There is no jurisdiction (管辖权) by any other country in the world."
Calling it a cross between a house and a ship, the prince acknowledged it was not the world' s most beautiful country but two large concrete towers with eight rooms in each tower. But it is quite pleasant sitting inside in the warm and watching the frightening weather fighting past the windows.
